Spur Cola was a brand of soda created by Canada Dry.

History[]

Spur Cola was released in 1948 (though other sources such as old signs and advertisements speculate the release date to be more around 1938.) as one of Canada Dry's first forays into Cola flavored drinks. When the drink was first released, it was only available in glass bottles, but was also eventually released in cans. Spur Cola was eventually discontinued, last being advertised in 1959 in both the United States and England.

Relaunch[]

In 1979, Canada Dry discontinued Sport Cola, a brand of low caffeine soda that they also owned at the time. After a change to the original Sport Cola formula, it was re-released, though under the Spur Cola brand, which by this point has been discontinued for several years.[1] Newspaper advertisements were released that same year that said "Introducing Spur Cola" advertising it as a new line of low caffeine soda.[2] This new iteration of Spur Cola was very similar to Sport Cola, as the new Spur brand was advertised as being 99% caffeine free, as well as using a new logo which more closely resembled the one used by Sport Cola. The relaunch didn't last long as Spur Cola was once again discontinued sometime in the mid 80's, with the last known appearance of the brand being from a 1987 commercial. It's also possible that the brand lasted longer in some international countries, as The Can Museum dates some cans for Spur Cola as late as 1994 and 1995.[3][4]

Trivia[]

  • Spur Cola was discontinued more than once, originally being discontinued in 1959 and was brought back before being discontinued again sometime in the mid to late 1980's.
  • The Spur Cola logo from the 1979 relaunch looks exactly like the Sport Cola logo.
  • When the brand was relaunched, it was advertised as a low caffeine soda, unlike its original counterpart.
  • Spur Cola was Canada Dry's 1st attempt at a Cola flavored drink.
