Sierra Mist was a lemon-lime soda flavor first released in the United States in 1999. It had many formula changes and was replaced by Mist Twst in 2016. Due to popular demand, it came back in 2018. Since then, it remained available until it was replaced by Starry in 2023.

Description[]

Sierra Mist was a Lemon-Lime soda flavor and had a clear look, having a comparable tasting flavor and color to that of Starry.

History[]

Original 1999 release[]

Sierra Mist was first released in restaurants in the Spring of 1999 and then later in stores in 2000 alongside a Zero Sugar variant that replaced Slice (Lemon-Lime) and Storm (both PepsiCo products). Its name was upon backing market research that involved 2,000 people, and Sierra Mist was selected from over 1,000 possible potential title names.

Sierra Mist was sold in two-thirds of the continental United States until January 2003, when the remaining Pepsi bottlers in the United States still bottling 7 Up switched to Sierra Mist.

2016 Rebrand[]

In December 2015, PepsiCo announced that Sierra Mist would be reformulating and rebranding to Mist Twst. Its 2016 formulation was sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup as opposed to Sierra Mist, sweetened with Real Sugar. Mist Twst was released in early 2016 and had little success, as it was discontinued and replaced by Sierra Mist in July 2018.

2023 Discontinuation[]

In Late 2022, PepsiCo announced that Sierra Mist would be discontinued in favor for Starry. In January 2023, Starry replaced Sierra Mist as Pepsi's lemon-lime flavored offering because Sierra Mist failed to gain market share in the growing lemon-lime category. Starry contains no caffeine, sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup, and as of January 2023, it is available in Regular and Zero-Sugar varieties.
