The Soda Wiki

Pibb Xtra is the Coca-Cola companies version of Dr Pepper. It is referred to by them as having a “Spicy Cherry” taste.

History[]

The soda was first introduced as "Peppo" on June 28, 1972 to compete against Dr Pepper, the name was changed to "Mr. Pibb" after Dr Pepper sued The Coca-Cola Company for trademark infringement. In 2001, a cinnamon-forward "spicy cherry" flavor replaced the original formula in many parts of the United States, marketed as a bolder version of original Mr. Pibb. As recently as 2020, Pibb Xtra has been marketed as a "refreshing, spicy cherry alternative to regular cola".

  • Coca-Cola Freestyle machines will either have Dr Pepper or Pibb Xtra on them, due to them being very similar drinks.
  • Despite the fact that the name change has happened almost 25 years ago, many people still refer to it as Mr Pibb.
