Pepsi-Cola Made with Real Sugar (previously known as Pepsi Throwback, and Pepsi Throwback Made with Natural Sugar in the United States) is a Pepsi cola flavor that is made with natural sugar, just like most soft drinks were in the 1980s before soda companies switched to high-fructose corn syrup.
Description[]
Like the original, Pepsi Throwback is a brown colored, cola-flavored drink, but has a much sweeter taste due to not using high-fructose corn syrup.
History[]
2009 Limited-Time Release[]
Pepsi Throwback was first released in the United States alongside Mountain Dew Throwback anytime from April to June 2009. Its ingredients and flavor were based on the original Cola flavor, and it used packaging and logos reminiscent of the 1973–1987 era of Pepsi packaging.
Because sales were impressive, both Throwback drinks saw a return on December 28th, 2009, and lasted through and until February 22nd, 2010. It was in this release that Throwback began using the 1940s era logo and Pepsi's original theme. It would continue to use this formula and packaging for all subsequent releases.
2010 Limited-Time Release[]
Pepsi Throwback saw another 5-week run beginning in July 2010, followed by the announcement in October that it would stay on shelves as long as sales were good. Finally, in December 2010, Pepsi Throwback returned to shelves again, this time with the words "Limited Time Only" removed from the packaging and a few years later. It got a rename of Pepsi Made with Real Sugar in June 2014, making it a permanent addition with a different name.
Canadian Release[]
On May 23rd, 2017, the official Canadian PepsiCo Facebook account announced on their Facebook page that Pepsi Throwback was released for a limited time in Canada to celebrate Canada's 150th Anniversary. This limited edition release lasted through most of the months of summer 2017 and until early-September of 2017 where Pepsi Throwback was later discontinued in Canada. It is unknown what this was the last release of Pepsi Throwback in Canada.
Trivia[]
- At some point, Pepsi came out with a glass bottle edition sold by itself and in a pack of four. It is unknown if this version of the drink (that is still being sold) originally had no mentioning of the being Pepsi Throwback in a bottle, other then using the 1973–1987 logos on the glass bottle.
