Fanta Classic, the original flavor of Fanta. Classic was first created as a substitute in 1940 due to difficulties importing Coca-Cola syrup into Nazi Germany during World War II due to an American trade embargo.

Description[]

Fanta Classic was a soda flavored from "leftovers of leftovers," including beet sugar, whey, apple pomace, and other flavors.

History[]

1940 Original Release[]

During World War II, The U.S. established a trade embargo against Nazi Germany, making Coca-Cola syrup strenuous to export. Max Keith, the head of Coca-Cola Deutschland, decided to create a drink product to substitute the temporarily halted production of Coca-Cola.

Its flavor used ingredients, only leftovers from the pulp to create the new drink. Its name was a result of a Max Keith telling his team to "use their imagination" (Fantasie in German), to which one of his salesmen, Joe Knipp, retorted "Fanta!"

When Fanta Classic was introduced in the German market, it was a big instant hit due to being one of the few drinks available back then. After the war, American Coca-Cola regained control of its German plant, formula, and the trademarks of Fanta.

By 1943, Fanta Classic soon dominated the German market with three million cans sold. After two years, it was discontinued when German and Dutch Coca-Cola reunited with their parent company after 1945.

In 1955, Coca-Cola relaunched the Fanta brand in Naples, the regional capital of Campania of Italy, began using local citrus to formulate the now famous Fanta Orange flavor.

2015 Limited-Time Release[]

In 2015, for its 75th anniversary, Coca-Cola Deutschland decided to release the original wartime flavored Fanta Classic once again for a limited time. This wartime drink includes 30% whey and pomace, described on the packaging as "less sweet" and a German original.

Trivia[]

  • Fanta Classic is the original flavor of the widely popular Coca-Cola brand, Fanta. If the American Trade embargo didn't come into place, then there wouldn't be a fruity brand to dominate with vastly different flavors.
