7 Up Gold was a 7 Up flavor first released in 1988 in the United States before being discontinued shortly after.
Description
7 Up Gold was a naturally spiced Cinnamon Ginger flavor of 7 Up and had a brown look.
History
7 Up Gold was first introduced in 1988 in many markets across the United States. Not long after its release, it was discontinued after a short time due to poor sales capturing 0.1% of the U.S. market.
Reception
In 1988, 7 Up's marketing slogan was "Never Had It, Never Will" (referring to caffeine). Due to 7 Up's nature of not having caffeine, 7 Up Gold did include caffeine.
The newly merged Dr Pepper/Seven Up company had high hopes of the flavor capturing 1% of the cola market, which was $26.6 billion (in 1988 U.S. dollars). However, as mentioned before, it captured 0.1% of the market. People were left confused by the 7 Up marketing team to market a dark-colored drink with caffeine that didn't sit well with the brand's entirety and therefore was discontinued after a short while.
